Arts & Activities, Feb, 2003 by Barbara Herberholz
Video/25 min./$24.95. Level: Elementary through Middle School. Crystal Productions, P.O. Box 2159, Glenview, IL 60025-6159, (800) 255-8629.
This release from Crystal Production's popular "Art Is ..." video series features artist Alleghany Meadows as he skillfully demonstrates how to throw a cylinder and bowl on the wheel. He begins with showing proper wedging techniques and proceeds to show viewers how to center the clay on the wheel. He then pulls the clay up into a cylinder before cutting it with a wire to show a cross section. Then he proceeds to throw a bowl, cutting a cross section as he did the cylinder, and finishes with a demonstration of cutting the foot. Close-up views make viewers feel as though they are actually throwing the pot themselves, and the commentary by Meadows is excellent and to the point.
