Arts & Activities, Sept, 2003

Three Videos/10 min. each/$129 set; $49 each. Level: Grade Seven and Above. Lucerne Media, 37 Ground Pine Road, Morris Plains, NJ 07950, (800) 341-2293, www.lucernemedia.com.

Artist/teacher Richard Byrnes demonstrates in these short, classroom-friendly videos how to make a still-life painting in oils. The first video deals with how to use and care for the different tools and materials needed, also introducing terms that apply to different techniques. He makes a charcoal sketch on canvas in the second and shows us how to lay out the colors on a palette. In the third video, "Painting the Picture," Byrnes shows the student how to place local colors as he continues working, and eventually completing the painting. Close-up shots, to-the-point commentary, and vivid demonstrations make these videos a fine resource for the beginning oil painter.--B.H.
