Animal Drawing and Anatomy

Arts & Activities, Sept, 2003

(2002; $6.95), by Edwin Noble. Dover Publications Inc., 31 East Second St., Mineola, NY 11501.

Oftentimes, students need a simple, straightforward reference to be used in the drawing of birds and animals: sheep, horses, cows, dogs, birds, and some wild animals. This is a book that provides advice and direction for drawing accurate images. The author--an artist and art instructor--did the illustrations. Emphasis is placed upon understanding of musculature, hair, feathers and other physical features. Some attention is given visual qualities such as action, pose, proportion and character. The book could be useful for upper-elementary and secondary-school students. It would need to be supplemented by other illustrations showing how other artists have rendered birds and animals in their work.--J.J.H.
