Wake Up Our Souls: a Celebration of Black American Artists

Arts & Activities,  Feb, 2005  by Jerome J. Hausman

WAKE UP OUR SOULS: A Celebration of Black American Artists (2004, $24.95) by Tonya Bolden. Harry N. Abrams, 100 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011.

This book is not meant to be a comprehensive history of the black American artistic legacy. Nevertheless, it does provide summary accounts of many important Afro-American artists. As such, it would serve as a useful text for upper-elementary, middle- and high-school students. The book is organized into three main chapters: Early Strivings (dealing with artists of the 18th and 19th century: Joshua Johnson, Edmonia Lewis, Edward Bannister, Henry Osaawa Tanner and Robert Scott Duncanson); Great Awakenings (dealing with artists in the 20th century: Malvin Jr. Johnson, James VanDerZee, Augusta Savage, Palmer Hayden, Hale Woodruff, Jacob Lawrence and William H. Johnson); and Upward and Outward (dealing with artists of the mid-20th century to the present: Hughie Lee-Smith, John Biggers, Lois Mailou Jones, Beauford and Joseph Delaney, Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, Febrath Hines, Gordon Parks, Alma Thomas, Betye Saar and Faith Ringgold). In each case, there are excellent examples of artworks.
