The Drawing Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist. . - Reviews: book - book review

Arts & Activities,  March, 2002  by Jerome J. Hausman

[BOOK] THE DRAWING BOOK: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist (2001; $19.95), by Richard McDaniel. Watson-Guptill Publications, 770 Broadway, New York, NY 10003.

Many artists and teachers of art make reference to the very personal and immediate qualities of drawing. As Richard McDaniel observed: "Drawing is intimate, possessing a directness that is often viewed as an artist's private note-taking, yet it can also refer to elaborate works intended for exhibition."

This publication is organized into four sections: Materials and Tools; Drawing with Line and Tone; Drawing with Color; and From Drawing to Painting. More than a third of the book's text is taken up with a discussion of materials and tools for drawing: pencils, charcoal, chalk, crayons, oil pastels, pens, brushes, etc. The next section, Drawing with Line and Tone, contains ideas and the demonstration of these ideas (for example, hatching and cross-hatching with pencil, drawing with an eraser, working wet with pencil, tonal effects in charcoal, and others). The final two sections (Drawing with Color and From Drawing to Painting) contain descriptions and demonstrations of what can be done in drawing.--J.J.H.
