Arts & Activities, Oct, 2002
Part of CRYSTAL PRODUCTIONS' "Art is ..." video series, Paper Molas was produced with artist and teacher Peggy Flores. The program explores the process of creating molas with colored paper. Traditionally, molas have been made in fabric by the Cuna people of Panama who have made designs that are scenes of sporting events, cultural or political subjects, or art patterns.
Flores demonstrates how to make paper molas starting with drawing the subject or design, cutting the layers of different colored paper so that each layer of color can be seen, and gluing them together to create a decorative mola. A variety of student work as well as actual fabric molas from Panama are also shown.
