Line, Shape and Value - art supplies - Video Recording Review

Arts & Activities,  March, 2003  by Barbara Herberholz

Video/45 min./Teacher's Manual/$79. Level: Grade 4 through Adult. Alarion Press, P.O. Box 1882, Boulder, CO 80306, (800) 523-9177.

This video is designed to be viewed in individual teaching segments, each one dealing with a specific project that has to do with line, shape and value. Students see demonstrations and hear explanations by Marilynne Bradley, as she covers controlling line, spacing, line quality and experimenting with line in various media. Shape is then defined through short lessons on composition and placement, the meaning of and use of positive and negative space, simplifying shapes, and making a composition in black, white and gray. The technique of enlarging and distorting a picture using a grid system is covered. Then basic information as to value--making a gray scale using texture as shading, and drawing a simple still life with a controlled spotlight--is detailed. More complicated projects conclude the video with a lesson on drawing three chairs in three different styles within the same composition, making a ribbon drawing of one's name, and drawing a still life on black paper. The teacher's manual provides an outline and illustration for each project. For information about this program, circle No. 400 on the Reader Service Card.
