[PRINT] MY BROTHER VINCENT VAN GOGH (2004, $19.9,5) by Ceciel de Bie. Getty Publications, 1200 Getty Center Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90049; www.getty.edu.
Few artists have had as much written about them as Vincent van Gogh. Yet, few books have provided the more intimate insights into the legendary life of this artist. The close relationship between the brothers, Vincent and Theo, is well known. This book traces Vincent's life experiences through stories, examples of his work and photographs. What is fascinating are examples of works by Jean-Francois Millet and treatments of the same subject by van Gogh. Clearly, we can see that van Gogh studied the works of others. His genius is the result of a fantastically talented individual and important influences by other artists.
This is a book written for students, age 10 and older. It provides personal details in the lives of two brothers and their family and friends. How dramatic and sad it is to read that Vincent died on July 29, 1890. Theo became seriously ill and died six months later on January 25, 1891. The two brothers are buried next to one another.
The book also includes suggested classroom activities that can engage students by responding to ideas and images created by Vincent van Gogh. For information about this publication, circle No. 393 on the Reader Service Card.
