If you aren't able to visit the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., this video will take you there for a half-hour tour and will also give you a great deal of background on how the family created America's first museum of modern art. The Collection began in 1921 in the Phillips home and expanded as the collection of European and American masterpieces was acquired. Viewers see and hear several members of the Phillips family speak of the history of this collection. The Phillips' vision and love of art led them to collect works by El Greco, Chardin, Bonnard, van Gogh, Degas, Gauguin, Cezanne, Renoir, Vuillard, Klee, Braque, Dove and Lawrence. Perhaps the jewel in the collection's crown is Renoir's dazzling Luncheon of the Boating Party. For information about this program, circle No. 395 on the Reader Service Card.
