Barkan

Arts & Activities, April, 2004 by Jerome J. Hausman

BARKAN (2003; $20), by Mary Zahner. National Art Education Association, 1916 Association Dr., Reston, VA 20191.

Manuel Barkan (1913-1970) was a close friend; hence, the publication of this book comes as a welcome addition to art education's literature for me. Putting aside my more understandable basics, this book provides a vivid, detailed sense for the flux of ideas and efforts of an important educator as they have helped shape present-day developments in our field. Zahner's biography details his early work, the influences of Arthur W. Dow, John Dewey and Ross Mooney. Barkan was at the forefront in the disciplined study of creativity. Following the publication of A Foundation for Art Education, he met Viktor Lowenfeld. The dialogue that ensued was, at once, challenging and informative.

Barkan's paper at the Penn State Conference, "Curriculum Problems in Art Education" (1966), can be seen as seminal in the development of CEMREL's Aesthetic Education Program, which, in turn, can be seen as an important influence in the shaping of the J.P. Getty's "discipline-based art education" initiative.

How easily important people in the shaping of the field of art education can be forgotten. His ideas and values have profoundly influenced those who knew and worked with him. Zahner's book provides a compelling narrative of an important scholar and teacher whose work deserves to be remembered. Indeed, we always need to keep in mind the important contributions of Manuel Barkan.--J.J.H. For information about this publication, circle No. 393 on the Reader Service Card.
