Artists from Latin America: A Biographical Dictionary

Arts & Activities, Jan, 2004 by Jerome J. Hausman

(2002; $59.95), by Kristin G. Congdon and Kara Kelley Hallmark. Greenwood Publishing Group, 88 Post Road West, P.O. Box 5007, Westport, CT 06881.

This is a book written primarily for high-school and college students seeking an introduction to artists from Latin American cultures. More than 75 artists are documented, including such well-known individuals as Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Marisol, Roberto Matta, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Rufino Tamayo. Just as important, this volume contains many artists that are not as well known. An effort was made to balance artists with respect to gender, geographical area, and artistic media The authors added: "The essays are not merely biographical; they also highlight societal influences such as politics, culture, language, and economics, especially when they inform the artist's work. When available, quotes have been added in an effort to give the artist a voice."

How easily students attending English-speaking schools can fall into the trap of thinking of painting and sculpture in terms of European imagery. Great art is defined in terms linked to the Renaissance and Modernist traditions. Yet, the traditions of art are much broader. There is so much more to be appreciated. Artists from Latin American Cultures can serve as an invaluable resource for teachers wishing to help their students grasp the diverse and rich sources for artistic expression.--J.J.H.
