Francis Bacon, a technical perfectionist, is often regarded as Britain's most important post-war artist. For a definitive biography and dozens of images of his great works, take a look at this DVD. With no formal training, Bacon began to be recognized in the early 1930s. His Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, painted in 1944, had a major impact on the art world. Initially inspired by Surrealism, Bacon was also influenced by the old masters, usually translated into blurred and gory figures imprisoned in architectural settings.
