VHS/CD/VISUAL

Artists of the 20th Century: FRANCIS BACON. DVD/50 min./$19.95. Level." High School and Above. Kultur International Films Ltd, Inc., 195 Highway 36, West Long Branch, NJ 07764, www.kultur.com.

Francis Bacon, a technical perfectionist, is often regarded as Britain's most important post-war artist. For a definitive biography and dozens of images of his great works, take a look at this DVD. With no formal training, Bacon began to be recognized in the early 1930s. His Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, painted in 1944, had a major impact on the art world. Initially inspired by Surrealism, Bacon was also influenced by the old masters, usually translated into blurred and gory figures imprisoned in architectural settings. This DVD is best viewed in short segments, the chapter headings being accessed by pressing the MENU key on your remote control. Chapters include From the Stage to Painting, the Artist Matured, First Studies, Diverse Portraits and so on.--B.H. For information about this program, circle No. 398 on the Reader Service Card.
