Jimmy Smith

(From the album Dot-Com Blues)

A septuagenarian who 40 years ago married jazz with the Hammond organ, Smith is strictly instrumental, livening his gleeful chords with sprightly beats. His airy fusion of soul and funk is appealing, but the up tempo makes us wonder about the title: Is this deft irony, an up-by-your-bootstraps philosophy or a naked attempt to cash in on a buzzword?
