The IBM-compatible PC is having a less-than-stellar 20th anniversary with price wars and poor margins. Intel is poised to take on rivals with deep discounts later this month. Analysts expect reductions of more than 50 percent on some of the company's latest Pentium 4 chips. Money-losing computer maker Gateway said it would shutter international sales operations in Ireland and Britain and reevaluate its efforts in Asia.

And Iomega will take a charge and lay off 38 percent of its workforce due to declining sales of its storage devices.
