NORDIC BUSINESS REPORT-1 October 2003-Ericsson joins other industry leaders to create open CPRI specification(C)1994-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Swedish telecomms solutions provider Ericsson said on Tuesday (30 September) that it had joined telecomms solutions providers Huawei of China, NEC, Nortel Networks and Siemens to cooperate in the CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface) industry initiative, and had launched the open publication of the specification for the key internal interface in the radio base station.

CPRI would focus on a 3G radio base station design that would divide the radio base station into a radio and a control part, by specifying one new interface, a radio driven interconnect point within base stations.

The CPRI specification would enable base station manufacturers and component vendors to focus their research and development efforts on their core competencies, according to the company.

Ericsson said that the CPRI specification was openly available for the benefit of the wireless industry.

The companies' individual objectives were to introduce products compatible to the specification on the market during 2004.
