Danish research links schizophrenia and gluten allergy

Nordic Business Report, Feb 20, 2004

NORDIC BUSINESS REPORT-20 February 2004-Danish research links schizophrenia and gluten allergy(C)1994-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

Research carried out with 7,997 schizophrenic patients in a Danish psychiatric unit has identified a possible link between schizophrenia and an allergy to gluten.

The scientists concluded that a history of gluten intolerance, also called coeliac disease, is a risk factor for schizophrenia. They also referred to clinical trials that had shown that cutting out cereals alleviated symptoms of schizophrenia.

The study was a collaboration between Denmark's Aarhus Universities and Aarhus Psychiatric Hospital and Johns Hopkins medical institutions in the United States, reported Reuters.
