The Norwegian oil company Statoil ASA said on Monday (15 March) that it had spudded a new appraisal well on the Alve discovery, close to its Norne field in the Norwegian Sea.
"We're hoping to establish that the field is considerably larger than has already been proven," said Knut Grindstad, exploration manager for the Halten/Nordland cluster.
"In our view, there's a good chance that possible additional resources in Alve will be oil," Grindstad added.
