Denmark plans to expand pig production

NORDIC BUSINESS REPORT-13 September 2004-Denmark plans to expand pig production(C)1994-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The Danish Agricultural Board has said that Denmark hopes to expand its pig production by 19% between now and 2015.

The country is looking to raise more pigs for meat while reducing dairy cow production, as European Union milk quotas prevent further expansion in the dairy industry. There are no similar regulatory restrictions on pig production.

Denmark is already the world's biggest exporter of pig meat, and a 19% increase would take the Danish output from 13m pigs to 15.8m.

One obstacle to increasing pig farming is the smell created by the animals, and a Danish Agricultural Board spokesman said that a number of studies were currently examining ways to reduce this problem. These include refrigeration of pig manure before it is used as fertiliser, according to Reuters.
