Swedish aircraft and rocket engine components developer and manufacturer Volvo Aero, part of Volvo Group (NASDAQ: VOLV), said on Thursday (14 December) that Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has selected it as collaboration partner in the early development phase of the engine for NASA's new manned launcher ARES I.

Volvo Aero will participate in the development of the nozzle for the J-2X engine.

"The contract may develop into Volvo Aero's most significant US space endeavour, and it is the first time Volvo Aero participates in the development of a manned system," Volvo Aero said.

The J-2X engine's nozzle is significantly similar to the nozzle Volvo Aero produces for the Ariane 5 ECA rocket's Vulcain 2 engine.

Volvo Group is headquartered in Gothenburg in Sweden. The group has 82,000 employees in more than 185 countries, and annual sales of over EUR20bn. Volvo is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Stockholm and on the NASDAQ.

One British pound (GBP) is worth approximately 1.49 euros (EUR)
