Swedish telecomms solutions provider Ericsson reported on Friday (20 October) that it will be upgrading the network of Kuwait-based operator Wataniya with full 3G/HSPA functionality.

Ericsson is to provide radio equipment and implementation services for the 3G/HSPA network under the terms of the contract. This will enable Wataniya to introduce a new generation of mobile broadband services including high-speed Internet access.

Ericsson's HSDPA solution will enable peak download speeds of up to 14.4 Mb/s when end-user terminals supporting this speed are available on the market.

The value of the contract between Ericsson and Wataniya was not revealed.

Equipment from Ericsson is used in more than 1,000 networks in 140 countries, and 40% of the world's mobile calls are made through Ericsson systems. The company is listed on Sweden's Stockholmsborsen and its shares are also traded on the London Stock Exchange and on Nasdaq.
