Ericsson to upgrade China Unicom's GSM network

Swedish telecomms solutions provider Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) said on Tuesday (19 June) that it has secured a framework contract to upgrade the GSM network of the Chinese operator China Unicom.

The contract covers the deployment of Ericsson's Mobile Softswitch Solution to increase China Unicom's capacity in the Jilin, Henan, Jiangsu, Yunnan, Hainan and Liaoning provinces.

"The upgraded infrastructure will enable China Unicom to meet its customers' needs for increased capacity and greater access to data services. It will also allow the operator to evolve to an all-IP network," Ericsson said.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Ericsson is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. Its equipment is used in more than 1,000 networks in 140 countries, and 40% of the world's mobile calls are made through Ericsson systems. The company is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Stockholm, and its shares are also traded on the London Stock Exchange and on Nasdaq.
