Mission

Enforces federal authority, suppresses insurrection and defends the nation when mobilized by the president, Congress or both. Units augment the Air Force by participating in operations and exercises worldwide by direction of the Air Staff, major commands or joint/unified commands. Commanded by the governors of the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands and the commanding general of the District of Columbia. Each governor is represented in the state or territory chain of command by an adjutant general. The ANG Readiness Center is a field operating agency.

Flying Activity

Provides 100 percent of the interceptor, 10 percent of B-1B bombers, 24 percent of the tactical airlift, 23 percent of the air-rescue capability, 32 percent of the tactical fighters, 24 percent of tactical air support, 43 percent of the KC-135 refueling capability and 11 percent of the strategic airlift capability of the total force, plus six aircraft for the Air Force's special operations mission.
