Airman, May, 2001
DALLAS -- With the issue of personal privacy of the utmost importance, putting Social Security numbers on checks is fast becoming a major concern among shoppers.
Army and Air Force Exchange Service customers are no different. They're concerned the use of Social Security numbers on checks is an open invitation for identity theft.
AAFES is working to eliminate the need for the numbers on customer checks and did a "proof-of-concept" test at five bases in Texas in November 2000.
Under the new system, the number entered is that of the person presenting the check. Verification is taken from the identification card.

AAFES began its new check acceptance program in April when It was introduced in East Coast exchanges. It will then move westward and to Europe and Pacific exchanges. The entire program should be completed by August.
