December 1981 - Time Capsule
All Hands, Dec, 2002
The bugle from USS Arizona (BB39) rests on the American flag on the cover of this month's issue. Edward Teats of Costa Mesa, Calif., reported for duty at U.S. Naval Air Station, Pearl Harbor, fresh from boot camp on Dec. 6, 1941. As Teats and a friend waited for the Liberty Launch on Ford's Island the next morning, they saw the Japanese begin dropping bombs.
They were headed toward the operations hangar as Arizona exploded about 100 yards in front of them. The bugle landed about 20 feet in front of him. To see this issue on line go to www.news.navy.mil/allhands
