All Hands, March, 2003

This cover shows USS Tarawa (LHA 1) and USS Saipan (LHA 2) which had the combined features of an LPH, LKA and LPD. This was a big step toward making the Navy's surface ships bigger and better. USS Virginia (DLGN 38) was also covered in this issue because it was the lead ship in a new class of vessels designed to provide anti-aircraft and anti-supmarine protection.

She was our fifth nuclear frigate and cost the nation about $297.2 million. We also had a Fleetwide cartoon contest. YNCS Gerald M. Avera's submission won.
