Happy Campus - Short Stuff - Movie Review

Girls' Life, August-Sept, 2003

Ever felt like you were born in the wrong town, during the wrong era...something? Kids at Camp Ovation have felt your pain. Camp Ovation is the setting in Camp, one of this summer's coolest films, in which campers are today's theater geeks and tomorrow's superstars. Joanna Chilcoat, 17, plays Ellen (second from left), a singer/actress who's so unpopular that she had to beg her brother to be her prom date--bummer! "Camp Ovation is a safe haven, a bubble, a utopia," explains Joanna, "where it's OK to be different." And different is what Camp is all about.

The film is American Idol meets Meatballs meals Fame meets a whole lot of funny! "Camp is funny because it's real, and reality can be hilarious," says Joanna. "In addition to laughing, I hope kids will see that you don't have to fit in to be liked. All you have to do is like yourself, and the rest will come." We give that a standing ovation!
