Love. Your. Hair. Really! Fine hair flops. Curl girls fight frizz. Thick hair like straw. Can we all just get along with our hair once and for all? Here's how to make peace and learn to love your locks

Girls' Life, August-Sept, 2004 by Karen Bokram, Jasmen Davis

Fine

What you don't love

No matter how hard you try, your hair is glued to your head by the end of lunch.

How to love it!

Wash and condition with ... volumizing shampoos and conditioners. They'll work hard to rebuild texture and add fullness to your limp strands. Our favorite? Daily ReNewal 5x ReVolumize Shampoo and Conditioner ($3 each, drugstores). Only condition from the middle of your head to the ends. Using conditioner on your roots can leave hair flat. And be sure to rinse, rinse, rinse.

Style with ... a root-lifting spray, like Head Wear Mega Voluminous Root Raiser ($5, drugstores). For maximum oomph, lift two-inch sections of hair and spray at the roots. Next, flip you head over and blow-dry. While still upside-down, lock in fullness with medium-hold spray (we like Garnier Fructis Style Full Control, $3, drugstores). Flip your head back up then smooth the top layer of your hair with a natural bristle brush. If ends frizz, try a dab of finishing cream (Pantene Pro-V Smooth and Sleek Smoothing CrSme, $7, drugstores).

Just don't ... overload your hair. Stay away from gels, pomades and waxes that will leave your strands flat as a pancake.

Medium

What you don't love

Well, let's be honest--there isn't a whole lot not to love about hair that isn't so fine it sticks to your head like boiled linguine and isn't plagued with too much texture. But on occasion, you might have oily roots and dry ends.

How to love it!

Wash and condition with ... a formula based on how dry (usually in the winter) or oily (hello, summer) your hair might feel, since you don't need to fluff your hair up or slick it down. Once a week, treat hair to a sudsing with a clarifying shampoo to get rid of product build-up.

Style with ... whatever you fancy! Your texture has the most styling flexibility, so experiment with different looks. Go straight and apply a volumizing mousse while hair is wet (ThermaSilk) Volume Infusing Mousse, $4, drugstores), then blow-dry hair with a flat paddle brush. Or get loose curls by spritzing dry hair with light hairspray (L'Oreal Studio Fast Forward Spray, $3.50, drugstores), then rolling large sections of hair onto thermal rollers for 10 minutes. Gently finger-style for a natural look.

Just don't ... skip giving your hair an extra treat just because it behaves so well most of the time. Use a protein pack (V05 Total Hair Recovery Treatment, $6, drugstores) 15 minutes a month for fabulous body and shine.

Thick

What you don't love

Your hair can feel like heavy straw, complete with flyaways and frizz.

How to love it!

Wash and condition with ... a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to tame flyaways and frizz without weighing your hair down like heavy styling products do. Try ThermaSilk Moisture Infusing Shampoo and COnditioner ($4 each, drugstores). Thick, wavy hair tends to be more normal to oily, so don't overload your scalp with conditioner. If your hair is long, deep-condition the ends once a week.

Style with ... a touch of Head Games Split Personality Dual-Purpose Smoothing Serum ($12, 1-800-456-9322) if using a moisturizing formula isn't enough to fight frizzies. As for flyaways, a touch of hair cream works better than shine sprays (we like Garnier Fructis Style Smoothing Mlik, $3, drugstores). Just put a dab of cream in your palms, rub hands together, smooth ends, and run your fingers through your hair.

Just don't ... weigh your hair down so much that it gets that weird flat-on-the-top, wide-at-the-bottom look. You'll look like a triangle head.

Curly

What you don't love

Depending on how thick your hair is, one of the three dreaded F's--frizzy, fuzzy or flat.

How to love it!

Wash and condition with ... curl-enhancing shampoos and conditioners. They hydrate and tame spirals--gotta love that! We like Textureline Curlmemory Shampoo and Conditioner ($ 10.50 and $11, lorealprofessional.com).

Style with ... a styling cream, like Matrix Curl.life Contouring Cream ($13, matrix.com) to define and control curls. Towel-dry hair before working cream through curls. Blow-dry hair with a diffuser attachment, then finger-twirl curls for definition. You can also let curls air-dry, but paws off or you'll stir up frizz. Finish with a glossing cream to boost shine (try John Frieda Shine Shock, $5.50, drugstores).

Just don't ... smother your hair with greasy frizz-fighting product and serums. If you moisturize well enough in the shower, you shouldn't have to overload your hair later.

ASIAN

What you don't love

Your hair sometimes has trouble feeling soft and silky, especially if it's wavy.

How to love it!

Wash and condition with ... a shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair (Bio Ionic IonClenz and IonCondition, $14 each, bioionic.com) to help your hair retain precious moisture, Treat your tresses to a hair mask or hot-oil treatment once a week. Apply to damp unwashed hair, let soak in for 20 minute, then rinse and shampoo as usual.

Style with ... a leave in conditioner (Terax's Hydrate Conditioning Lotion, $24, 1-800-213-5531) to add softness and shine, plus fight frizz. Finish with a misting of shine spray (Aussine Mega Styling Spray, $4, drugstores).
