Political Pride - politically-active teens

Girls' Life, Oct, 2000

Fired up about gun control? Want to win the war against drugs and alcohol? Seventy-three percent of students ages 13 to 15 believe they have the power to make a political difference. In a survey sponsored by Lutheran Brotherhood, 502 teens shared opinions on subjects ranging from their impressions of politics to whether they believe they can affect politicians' decisions.

How can you express your views? Lutheran Brotherhood's RespecTeen Speak for Yourself program is one way. It encourages junior high students to learn the democratic process and communicate with elected officials. Students are urged to write letters to Congress members regarding issues like gun control, crime, and drugs and alcohol. Visit www.RespecTeen.com for info. While you're on the Web, check out www.scholastic.com/newszone for breaking news from conventions and elections. Peruse profiles and background info on candidates, plus read candidate interviews by Scholastic's group of youth reporters. Then elect your favorite candidate. We know you can't officially vote, but you do have a voice!
