Get crafty
Girls' Life, Oct-Nov, 2002 by Karen Bokram, Rachel Karceski
Sick of just pulling your hair back into a ponyfail every morning? Why not try one of these six sweet fall trends? We looked to the fall fashion runways for inspiration and found the most darling 'dos for you!
Bold Barrettes
TRENDSPOTTING: Forget the wimpy little hair accessories of autumns past. These new big barrettes make a super-bold statement.
WHAT YOU NEED: Helen of Troy Wave Rage Slim Hair Straightener flattening iron, $15, Leather Flower barrette by Kemestry, $20.
GET THE LOOK: Part hair on the side. Flat iron hair, starting from underneath and working all the way out to get hair pin-straight. Pull one side up, and put flower barrette in place.
The Gwen Ste-pony
TRENDSPOTTING: No Doubt's Gwen Stefani sported this style at all the fall fashion shows.
WHAT YOU NEED: Goodle Ouchless snag-free elastics, $2 for 75. Hair brush. Bobby pins.
GET THE LOCK: Pull hair into high ponytail, leaving out one chunk of hair at the nape of your neck. Secure the ponytail with a snag-free elastic. With a brush, lightly lease the base of the pony to give it some height. Braid the leftover chunk, at the nape into a thick orald, and wrap it once around the pony using two criss-crossed bobby pins to hold in place. Leave end of braid loose to hang from the pony.
The New Twist
TRENDSPOTTING: The tres chic French designer clothing line Celine showcased this gorgeous updo. We made ours crafty cool by twisting it with a homemade-looking headband.
WHAT YOU NEED: Wooden headband by Girlprops, $14. Bobby pins. Pomade. Hairspray.
GET THE LOOK: Make a side part, leaving hair loose from your ears forward. Pull the rest of your hair into a low pony (do not secure with elastic), and twist up toward the top of your head. Use criss-crossed bobby pins to hold the twist in place. Take leftover front pieces and tuck them into the twist from the sides, letting the very tips stick out like talls. Pin in place with bobby pins. Use a tiny amount of pomade to separate and sculpt tips. Finish by cutting the elastic off a decorative headband, leaving only the ornamental part. Use bobby pins to hold flowers in place alongside the twist. Top things off with a little hairspray for extra hold.
Peacock Pigtails
TRENDSPOTTING: This fall's flights of feather fancy look fabulous as hair accessories.
WHAT YOU NEED: Peacock feathers (or whatever kind you like) from a craft store. Goodie Ouchless snag-free elastics, $2 for 75.
GET THE LOCK: Part hair down the middle and separate into two even sections. Gather hair into two low ponies, using snag-tree elastics. Wrap a small piece of hair from each ponytail around the elastic to hide it. Tuck end beneath the rubber band to hold it in place. Finish by feeding a feather through the elastic.
Big Bands
TRENDSPOTTING: Wide, stretchy headbands are all the rage. They're adorable with just about every hair length and cut. Plus your hair will stay outta your face!
WHAT YOU NEED: Headband by Girl-props, $4. Pomade. Curling iron to perfect curls, if desired.
GET THE LOOK: Use a dab of pomade to separate curls and zap frizz. Put on your hair band, and offset it so it looks as though it's on a diagonal.
Crimps
TRENDSPOTTING: Crimps are a fabulous beauty flashback. And they were all over the runways!
WHAT YOU NEED: Conair Shiny Styles hair styler with four interchangeable styling plates, $33. Rettail comb (the kind that has a pointy end on the handle). Wooden beads from a craft store. Bobby pins. Hairspray.
GET THE LOOK: Using a rattail comb, form a zig-zag part. Comb hair straight, using the flat-iron plates that come with your Shiny Styles if necessary. Piece out a section by weaving the pointy end of the comb through hair from the front only (this will give the style more depth). Use the crimping plates on small sections of the separated pieces down the length of your hair. Repeat on the other side. Decorate by threading wooden beads in hair. Loop hair around a bobby pin, and guide the beads up and over a strand of hair (the crimped sections of hair will hold the beads in place). Finish with a spritz of light-hold hairspray to smooth flyaways.
