Score!

Girls' Life, Dec, 2001

And the crowd goes wild! Ashley Martin, a junior at Jacksonville State University in Alabama is the first woman ever to suit up, play and score in a Division I college football game. Ashley is an extra point kicker for the Jacksonville Gamecocks. Football coach Jack Crowe spotted Ashley playing midfield on the women's soccer team, and he asked her to try kicking last spring.

This is big! Ashley is going down in women's history. "That's not what it's about at all," Ashley says, coyly. "That would be like I'm making a statement, and that's not the case. I've got a job to do, and that's what I'm focusing on." Even Coach Crowe says, "When you see the eyes of an athlete competing, you develop a trust, and I have a trust for her ability to get the job done." Now, Ashley splits her time between soccer and football and, whether on the field or bench, she's treated like one of the guys. Well, Ashley, it may be no big deal to you, but we say you've scored big for womankind.
