22 Great New Year's resolutions

Girls' Life,  Dec, 2001

This year, instead of just resolving to be nicer or to get better grades, why not resolve to really make a difference? Here are some sensational but simple ways to make your world a kinder place.

Lead something.

* Floss.

* HAVE A BLAST, EVEN IF IT MEANS MAKING A FOOL OF YOURSELF.

* Set the table so the fam can eat together.

* Follow through by doing what you say you're gonna do.

* Take a CPR and basic first-aid class (because you never know).

* Realize that your parents aren't made of money.

* Apologize when you know you've hurt someone's feelings.

* Babysit for free one night for a single mom who could use a break.

* Stay out of your older sister's closet.

* Ditto for your mother's makeup bag.

* Tell someone why you're angry instead of giving them the silent treatment.

* Try a salad dressing that isn't orange.

* Try a cheese that isn't pre-sliced.

* That's right--floss!

* Consistently fill the bird feeder so our feathered friends can count on you for food.

* Instead of just throwing flowers in a vase, get some foam and arrange a masterpiece.

* Learn to say "thank you" fabulously. The Thank You Book for Kids, written by 14-year-old Ali Spizman, has tons of ideas on how to write and create truly memorable thank-yous. (And we're giving away 10 copies! Just go to www.girlslife.com for details.)

* Admit that something about your appearance bugs you, and ask someone you trust for advice on how to turn it into an asset.

* Tell your little sister she can crawl into your bed when she has nightmares.

* Cheer on our American athletes during the Winter Olympics next month.

* Design a business car for yourself--you never know when you might need it.

* Spend a rainy afternoon finger-painting.

* Give up door slamming.

* Learn to iron shirts to perfection--your shirts.

* Ask for someone on the phone the polite way: "Hello, Mrs. Taylor. This is Kelly. May I please speak to Rob?" Totally impressive.

* Listen to music without words.

* Recognize that you are lucky and have enough love in your heart to share with someone who isn't as fortunate.
