Valentine-less on V Day

Girls' Life, Feb-March, 2005 by Jackie Newman

Valentine's Day is near, but your Valentine isn't? Have an absolutely fab 14th ... totally guy-free!

We all know that feeling. Lace-frilled love notes, rose bouquets and heart-shaped boxes are flying around all over the place, and you feel like the only girl in the free world who doesn't have a BE Yeah, it can be hard rockin' solo on a day that's built for two, but you don't have to spend your 14th in a fit of envy. We have awesome ways to make your V Day one on which only the violets are blue.

Sweet secrets

Any holiday is a great excuse to give gifts, so plan a "Secret Cupid" with your girls the week before the big day. Beginning on Feb. 7, anonymously leave your secret pal small gifts on her desk each day. Then, on V Day, give your pal her final gift and do a Secret Cupids reveal.

Give it up

In keeping with the spirit of giving, surprise your buds with a heart-shaped cake. Or break out the glitter and construction paper, and whip up some homemade Valentine's cards. Get fancy by making pop-up cards or teeny friendship books with your fave quotes or pies.

Think pink

Since Valentine's Day fails on Monday this year, invite your posse over for an after-school all-pink pow-wow. Make pink sugar cookies (add red dye to the dough) and sandwich them with strawberry ice cream. After your sugar rush, snuggle up to a DVD (rent Pretty in Pink or America's Sweethearts). After the flick, dish about teachers, your annoying sibs, the last Jack & Bobby episode ... anything but boys at your school! By homework time, you'll know V Day doesn't have to be for couples only.
