HANGIN' WITH Cool Cats
Girls' Life, April, 2001 by Kelly White
Do you guys really play the instruments?
Rachael: Well, they're not live-recorded by us, but we're in the right position so our strumming matches up. I guess the actual playing are studio musicians. The singing voice of my character is Kay of the band Letters to Cleo. She records it, and then I lip-synch.
Rosario: I picked up the bass pretty easily, so pretty much all inserts of me playing are me. Tara was actually live just because, you know, she's playing the drums and you really can't not hit them. When Tara's playing, she's just the cutest thing in the whole world. She's got this huge mass of blonde hair that's just flying all over the place. She's the best. So she's like my favorite pussycat, and I wanted to play the drums.
Tara: They made me tale drum lessons, and I practiced for like two months prior to the movie. I didn't know how to play drums at all. I learned how to play really just for the three or four songs from the movie. If I ever tried to play anything else, I would have no clue.
Did anything funny happen on the set?
Rachael: Well, it was about our tails. The tails were very long. They went from our lower backs to the ground and then about six or eight more inches. We were always stepping on each other's tails. We'd get all tangled up and somebody would fall. Usually, it was Tara. She'll admit it--she can't walk in heels.
Rosario: We're like teetering around on these platform shoes with these low-riding pants. If there wasn't any falling, it was suddenly just mad butt cleavage.
Tara: It was the worst. We were like ripping our clothes. The tails were pinned on, so if we stepped on them the safety pin would pop open and poke you in the butt.
Rosario: It was really cartoonish--the outtakes on the film would be so hilarious to watch because there was just so much stuff going on. It was so funny.
While it was lets of laughs, was it hard work?
Tara: Absolutely. Every movie is hard work. You're like working 14, 15, 16-hour days every day. You have to memorize your lines, you have to act a certain way, you have to wear the clothes. It's hard.
You really worked your tails off. Meow!
