Girls' Life, April, 2002

After 11 days, five climate zones and 19,340 feet, Nicole Wineland-Thom ""ly climbed one of the seven summits of the world. At 12, Nicole is the yo"" to have climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Her jour"" other trekkers and a local guide was filmed for the IMAX movie Kilimanjaro.

To the "" Africa. Nicole lives in Massachusetts but is no stranger to Africa. Her parents "" safari business, and Nicole explains, "I have been to Africa every year since before I was a year old." Nicole is no newcomer to hiking either. She's climbed Mt. Sinai in Egypt and Mt. Hobson in New Zealand. But this trek was particularly taxing, and there was a moment when Nicole thought she might not even make it: In the crater, about an hour and a half below the top, there are these roots all stuck together and they make steps each like a foot high. It seemed like I climbed 1,000 steps and that I might fall and not be able to get back up. The air was so thin it was hard to breathe. We had to carry oxygen tanks." It w as well worth the effort when she finally reached the top. "I was crying I was so happy," she says. See it now at an IMAX Theater near you. Go to www.imax.com to check listings.
