California CPA, March, 2002
You've seen the headlines in SPAM e-mails and classified magazine ads, pushing courses and seminars which preach that payment of U.S. income tax is illegal.
The IRS has issued a report in response to some of the more common frivolous "legal" arguments made by individuals and groups that oppose tax law compliance.
"Why Pay Taxes? The Truth About Frivolous Tax Arguments" groups the arguments under six general categories, with variations within each category. Each contention is briefly explained, followed by a discussion of the legal authority that rejects the contention.
A final section explains the penalties that the courts may impose on those who pursue tax cases on frivolous grounds.
