Domestic partners now have more rights - FTB News - Brief Article

California CPA, March, 2002

AB 25 (Ch. 01-893) expands the group of individuals who may register as domestic partners and confers new legal rights on all registered domestic partners.

For taxable years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2002, several existing taxpayer benefits for medical and health insurance expenses have been extended to include a taxpayer's domestic partner and a domestic partner's dependents. The new law treats the domestic partner as the taxpayer's spouse for purposes of determining certain deductible medical expenses.
