Information Superhighways Newsletter, May, 2001
High Speed Net Solutions announced that is has become a core developer for Qualcomm's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless platform. BREW is an applications platform for wireless devices using a variety of air interfaces including, among others, code division multiple access (CDMA), the leading standard for third-generation, high-speed wireless voice and data communications.
High Speed's Summus Technology Group, a pioneer in media solutions for encoding, managing, and distributing digital content, will develop multimedia applications for Qualcomm's BREW platform. The BREW platform provides a standard programming environment that gives software developers the tools to create compelling wireless Internet applications and services that can be utilized by carriers to offer to their customers.
The multimedia quality that High Speed's technology will allow carriers to provide their customers with will fundamentally change the way consumers communicate and use mobile products.
Currently, wireless handset applications development is virtually closed to third-party developers. Qualcomm chose to work with High Speed's Summus Technology development group because of its unique compression technology. Summus will work with Qualcomm to BREW-enable a multimedia platform for applications such as video and image delivery and playback as well as 3-D graphics delivery and rendering. As such, Summus intends to add key functionality to Qualcomm's BREW platform.
