EarthLink has installed Akamai hardware and software throughout its network to improve delivery of content to its nearly 5 million subscribers. The agreement follows an extensive trial period where EarthLink conserved bandwidth and simultaneously cut download waits for Internet content, including dynamic HTML and streaming media.

The deal is the second piece of news from Akamai this week, which said earlier that Digex, a Web host, will begin offering its EdgeSuite product to its large corporate customers. For EarthLink, the deal should help increase customer satisfaction, a key concern for ISPs in the highly competitive market.
