FPL FiberNet To Provide Genuity with Dark Fiber in Miami and Fort Lauderdale - Brief Article

ISP Business, Sept, 2000

FPL FiberNet, a provider of fiber-optic infrastructure in Florida, announced it will provide Genuity with dark fiber in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale metropolitan areas under a 20-year agreement.

Th FPL FiberNet network gives Genuity access to all of the growing Latin America routes and cable heads that are being built in Southern Florida -- a tremendous competitive advantage for receiving and transmitting Internet traffic into Latin America and the Caribbean.

"We are pleased to have been selected to provide fiber optic services to Genuity, one of the world's largest Internet backbone providers. The reach, scalability, and flexibility of FPL FiberNet's network, in addition to our current deployment and availability in Florida, offer a distinct business advantage for Genuity and other service providers looking to do business in this burgeoning market," said Neil Flynn, FPL FiberNet president.

FPL FiberNet operates a 1,600 mile fiber optic, long-haul network in Florida and is building 1,500 miles of high-count fiber in more than 150 municipalities in the state. In addition to its Miami/Ft. Lauderdale network, FPL FiberNet is completing metropolitan networks in Orlando, Tampa/St. Petersburg, West Palm/Boca, Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Melbourne, Daytona, Fort Pierce, Lakeland, Tallahassee, Pensacola, Naples, and Gainesville.

Dark fiber is unused fiber through which no light or signals are passing. Companies purchasing dark fiber must deploy their own electronics and signal equipment in order to light the fiber and make it usable on their network.
