Kentucky Fried Cruelty

New Internationalist, Sept, 2004

The Dalai Lama has written to Yum! Restaurants International, parent company of Kentucky Fried Chicken, asking it to abandon plans to expand KFC restaurants into Tibet. There are already over 1,000 KFC locations in China--more than in any country outside the US. Undercover investigations into KFC suppliers in Britain, Germany, India, the US and Australia have found crippled chickens living in crowded, filthy conditions.

'In Tibet, buying [small, live] animals from the butcher, thereby saving their lives and setting them free, was a common practice,' writes the Dalai Lama. 'Many Tibetans, even in exile, continue this practice where practically possible.'
