Carolyn R. Cooper
The Maryland State Department of Education has named Carolyn Cooper its staff specialist for gifted and talented education. For the past two years, she has coordinated gifted and talented programs for the Baltimore County, Md., schools. Cooper also was director of Project High Hopes in Hamden, Conn.
William C. Dean
After eight years as superintendent in Grand Haven, Mich., Bill Dean has assumed the top berth in the Frederick County schools in Winchester, Va. Dean's earlier postings included the superintendency in Rapid City, S.D., executive director of instruction in Fort Collins, Colo., and assistant state commissioner in Colorado.
Gloria Lewis
Two years after she was appointed assistant superintendent of curriculum and staff development, Gloria Lewis was elevated to the superintendency of the Reeths-Puffer Schools in Muskegeon, Mich. She previously served as curriculum director in Godwin Heights, Mich. Lewis also served as a middle school principal and elementary principal.
Donald J. McKenzie
The Putnam/Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services has a new district superintendent, Don McKenzie. He spent the past 2 1/2 years as assistant superintendent for administration. Previously, McKenzie was superintendent in Putnam Valley, N.Y., and assistant superintendent for instruction in Nyack, N.Y.
John A. Phillips
After seven years as superintendent in Eanes, Texas, John Phillips has moved back to his home state to assume the superintendency of the 11,000-student Bartow County, Ga., district. Phillips had been superintendent in Rockdale County, Ga., for eight years and earlier was an associate and assistant superintendent in the Peach Tree state.
Albert Thomas
Following a five-year stint as superintendent in Denton, Texas, Al Thomas has moved into the same berth in the 22,000-student Baldwin County, Ala., system. Earlier, he served as superintendent in Cedar Hill, Jacksboro and Honey Grove, all districts in the Lone Star state. Thomas also worked as an elementary and high school principal.
