Powerful Leadership Strategies to Build Staff Morale - book review

School Administrator, Jan, 1994 by Margaret C. Trader

In Powerful Leadership Strategies to Build Staff Morale, Duane Sutherland offers practical strategies to restore and improve morale in educational organizations.

In Chapters 1-6, Sutherland defines morale and shows the impact that low morale has had on the teaching profession. Chapter 7 presents 29 specific morale-building suggestions that range from school tours to bargaining bulletins.

Although the format is easy to read and the language is compact, the copyright restrictions of the book preclude the reader's use of the many worthwhile charts, surveys, and evaluation documents that support the suggestions. Appendices display the evaluation form used by the author's district, a principal performance evaluation form, a public attitude survey, and a parent appraisal questionnaire.

The text is formatted as a workbook, allowing the reader to make notes in the margin and respond to specific questions asked in the various chapters.
