Hail Alma Mater - Brief Article

School Administrator, Feb, 1997

Mining an institution's alumni for financial support no longer is just the province of higher education. The New Orleans Public Schools, with an estimated 350,000 living graduates, sees unlimited potential to be tapped.

The district has created an Office of Alumni and Development to create an alumni association in hopes of raising funds for facility improvements and dwindling financial support for the arts and athletics. The goal is $100 million by the year 2000, says Glenn Sergeant, who directs the alumni operation.

The district is trying to reach alumni through a newsletter, class reunions, meetings of band and booster clubs, and word of mouth. Ata kickoff event last fall, the alumni association attracted 2,000 people.
