Lost in Cyberspace - Brief Article

School Administrator, Feb, 2000

Although 75 percent of parents say they know where their children spend time on-line, a new study released by Web-sense Inc. and Yankelovich Partners shows 58 percent of teen-agers have accessed an objectionable Web site.

Part of a larger two-year study of students' on-line habits in the classroom, the study also found:

* Thirty-nine percent of teen-agers have seen sites featuring offensive music, and 20 percent of teen-agers have seen sites featuring violence; and

* Teen-agers spend more than 10 hours on-line per week

The same study reported that 87 percent of teen-agers and 94 percent of parents support the use of filtering software in schools.

Additional information about the survey is available at www.websense.com.
