The Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics is renewing efforts to engage schools on their requirements under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. The office has developed a new website specific to asbestos in schools.

AHERA, passed by Congress in 1986, protects school building occupants from asbestos exposure. According to the EPA, asbestos is still widely "managed in place" in school buildings across the country.
