William C. Bosher Jr.

Virginia has a new state superintendent of public instruction in Bill Bosher, who was appointed by the new governor, George Allen Jr. Bosher has served since 1981 as superintendent of the 35,000-student Henrico County, Va., system. Earlier, he worked for three years in the state department of education and was a high school principal.

Thomas E. Ingram Jr.

The superintendent in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1978, Thomas Ingram has moved up to the deputy superintendency in the Alabama Department of Education. Ingram held a variety of administrative posts in Tuscaloosa, beginning in 1966. He also is an adjunct assistant professor in administration and higher education at University of Alabama.

Duane J. Mattheis

A 43-year education career ended recently when Duane Mattheis retired as executive director of the Association of Metropolitan School Districts, based in Richfield, Minn. Previously, he was state commissioner in Minnesota and executive deputy commissioner in the U.S. Office of Education.

Al Ramirez

The new director of the Iowa Department of Education is Al Ramirez, who had been executive deputy superintendent of the Illinois State Board of Education since 1990. Previously, Ramirez was executive director of school management in the Colorado Springs, Colo., School District. Earlier he was deputy superintendent in the Nevada Department of Education.

Ann E. Serratore

The Bristol, Conn., Public Schools have welcomed back Ann Serratore as assistant superintendent, a post she held from 1987 to 1992. In 1992-93, she served as chief of the Bureau of Curriculum and Instructional Programs in the Connecticut Department of Education. She started her education career as a teacher in Montreal.

Ellison M. Smith Jr.

A 33-year career in education concludes this year for Ellison Smith, who retires as superintendent of York, S.C., District 1, a post he assumed in 1986. Smith also was superintendent of Orangeburg, S.C., District 7, following principalships in South Carolina and Georgia. He also was a member of the AASA Federal Legislative Corps.

Henry R Williams

Following a five-year stint as superintendent in the Syracuse, N.Y., City School District, Henry Williams has assumed the top post in the Little Rock, Ark., schools. Earlier, Williams spent two years as deputy superintendent in the Roanoke, Va., district and was principal of Wilson Magnet School in Rochester, N.Y.

Michael Woodall

The new superintendent of the Norristown, Pa., school district is Michael Woodall. He had spent the last six years as superintendent of Lexington School District 2 in West Columbia, S.C. Earlier he was superintendent in Milford, Del. He started his professional career in education as band director in Union, S.C.
