Time on Task

School Administrator, March, 1995

Public school teachers worked an average of 9.25 hours per day and spent another 11 hours a week outside of school in activities relating to their teaching (such as traveling with students, preparing lessons, and reviewing homework).

Private school teachers spent 30 minutes more in activities with students and 42 minutes more in activities without students.

These findings came from a schools and staffing survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics.

The new study found public secondary teachers taught an average of 4.9 periods per day and their average class size was 23 students. Private school teachers taught 4.6 periods and had 16.6 students per class.
