Herman G. Bartlett Jr.

As serving as superintendent in three Virginia districts for the last 16 years, Herman Bartlett has moved to Hagerstown, Md., as superintendent of the Washington County Schools. Before becoming a superintendent, Bartlett worked as an assistant superintendent for instruction and a principal at the elementary and secondary levels.

Johnny E. Brown

An educator for 27 years, Johnny Brown has assumed the superintendency of the Birmingham, Ala., Public Schools. He was superintendent of the Wilmer-Hutchins district in Texas and earlier was executive deputy superintendent in Houston. Brown also has worked as executive deputy superintendent in Cleveland.

Gretchen Hanson

The Gateway, Calif., Unified Schools will have a new superintendent in July when Gretchen Hanson moves up from deputy superintendent, a post she filled since 1994. Previously, she was an assistant superintendent for educational services in the Orange, Calif., Unified Schools. Hanson also worked as an elementary and middle school principal in the Alvord, Calif., district.

Diane L. Kirk

After 5 1/2 years as assistant superintendent of the Peters Township Schools in McMurray, Pa., Diane Kirk was elevated to the district's superintendency. She also served for seven years as coordinator of the Principals Academy of Western Pennsylvania. Earlier Kirk was an elementary school principal in the Shaler Area, Pa., School District.

Barbara M. Pulliam

Following a three-year stint in the Rockford, Ill., district, Barbara Pulliam has moved into the superintendency of the St. Louis Park, Minn., schools. Pulliam was associate superintendent and director of equity and desegregation in Rockford. She previously was senior associate for education at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C.

Jim Sweeney

The Sacramento City Unified Schools named Jim Sweeney to the superintendency following a nine-month term as the interim head. Sweeney earlier served as the district's deputy superintendent for school improvement. He spent 15 years as a professor at Iowa State University and served as section leader of the educational administration program.
