Bill Branum

The new superintendent in the ColumbiaBrazoria School District in West Columbia, Texas, is Bill Branum. He previously served as superintendent in the Carroll Independent School District in Southlake, Texas, for 1 1/2 years. He was Carroll's assistant superintendent for six years.

Alfred R. Butler

The Virginia Association of School Superintendents has picked a new executive director, Al Butler. Butler also will be an associate professor at University of Virginia's Curry School of Education. He had served for the past 11 years as superintendent of the Franklin, Va., City School District.

Marilyn K. Crain

Marilyn Crain has assumed the assistant superintendency of the newly merged Union County/College Corner Joint School District in Liberty, Ind. She previously spent 10 years as superintendent in College Corner, Ohio. Cram continues to serve as board vice president of the Fairfield, Ohio, City School District.

Joan P. Kowal

The new superintendent in Palm Beach County, Fla., is Joan Kowal, who spent the past 4 1/2 years as superintendent in neighboring Volusia County. Kowal previously held the superintendency of the Ferguson Florissant, Mo., schools. A former Florida Superintendent of the Year, she is a member of the AASA Executive Committee.

Donna D. Schmidt

Following two years as associate superintendent, Donna Schmidt has been elevated to the superintendency of the Melvindale Northern Allen Park, Mich., schools. Schmidt earlier spent two years as the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Her first administrative post was in Allen Park, Mich.

Herbert E. Salinger

A distinguished career in educational leadership ends in June with the retirement of Herb Salinger after six years as executive director of the American Association of School Personnel Administrators. A 28-year AASA member, Salinger also was director of the California School Boards Association.
