UPDATE

School Administrator, May, 1997

Editor's Note: The School Administrator occasionally reports on recent developments related to stories published in previous issues of the magazine.

* The Long Beach, Calif., school district, whose pioneering use of school uniforms in elementary schools was featured in the February 1996 issue, now is putting in place a strict dress code for its 20,000 high school students. The school board voted unanimously to implement the code this fall. In a pilot program, ninth graders at a magnet high school opening in September will be required to wear uniforms.

* Corkin Cherubini, whose crusade to undo districtwide segregation was featured on the cover of the June 1995 issue, resigned from the superintendency of the Calhoun County, Ga., schools in December, rather than fight a newly elected school board majority that pledged to replace him.
